Project Management Part I

Waterfall

This can be an approach to develop software. It belongs to the oldest software development processes.
The name results from cascading single actions like a waterfall.

There is a modification which allows you to step from one action back to the previous one if you detect some mistakes.

This process is very static and you have to focus mainly on acquiring the requirements because its difficult and expensive to do the whole process again if your customer istn’t satisfied.
(for example: (1): 2 years ; (2): 1 year ; (3): 1/2 year … (6): years)

空を見るから私は足元を見るのだ

涼風そよぐ今日この頃、皆様はいかがお過ごしでしょうか。
本日ブログ担当のｶﾛ藤でございます。
最近、私の愛用のiPodのハードディスクが絶命寸前で只今買い換えを考えております。
しかし、最近Appleのめまぐるしい勢いの成長を目にすると、Microsoft1シンパとしてはなんとも購入を躊躇するほどの複雑な気分に教われます。

Appleといえば最近読んだ良い記事を紹介します。 起業家諸君：君たちはスティーブ・ジョブズではない、だから跳ぶ前に見よ Appleのようにとりあえず何かを作れば誰かがついてくるそういったスタンスへの警鐘になります。何かと耳が痛い記事であります。飛ぶ前に足元も確認しなかったり、足元がすでに空だった場合もございますので、皆様ゆめゆめご注意下さい。

最後の成功した”ジョブズ像”については私も記事の通りと考えています。つまりは、全てをジョブズが行っているわけではなくて、研究なりの分野のエキスパートの技能による”足元”がしっかり整って、成功したAppleのジョブズを作っているという事。風評のジョブズは一人では構成されていない事。マーケティングも強く、組込まれた技術の高さ (美的な部分や/機能美等の主観はこの際置いておきます) があるからこそ成功し、ジョブズ像を日々強大にさせているのでしょう。我々も技術やマーケティングを強め、飛ぶ前に足元しっかりしておきたいところです。

最後に全く関係のない話ではございますが、元記事のブログのエントリアーカイブのURLはこれで良いのだろうか…少し疑問に思うお年頃。

Territorial Expansion and Defence

Almost half a year has passed since I started work here at Eyes, JAPAN, and I would like to announce here that I have finally picked up some self-confidence regarding my work. Maybe the Maya study sessions I held the last month have helped, or maybe having fresh blood in the company has made it a necessity to guide them.

This creates bonds that strengthens the team as a whole and encourages cooperation and makes workflow smoother, and that will hopefully one day extend beyond the boundaries of the office to friendship outside work like I have established with the three As.

Besides work, I have also started becoming more conscious of my cooking. The picture attached is cabbage rolls that I made by myself – ignoring the fact that the hamburg was bought as-is from the supermarket (although I added cheese and remoulded them) – and it is probably the first time I have ever spent so long in the kitchen preparing one meal. And hopefully not the last.

Obazda (オバツダ)

I am from Bavaria, Germany, the place where a worldwide famous festival called “Oktoberfest” is held every year. But even though I lived only about 1 hour away from Munich, where the Oktoberfest has it’s traditional place, I have never managed to go there. Recently I found out that in Sendai a smaller version of the Oktoberfest is held every year – this year from September 17th to September 26th. It was only by coincidence that I found out about its existence, so I visited it. What I could find was a very fun and exciting place with lots of traditional music, happy people, beer and food. Food and drinks from both nations (Japan and Germany) were offered and everyone was able to enjoy lots of different tastes while enjoying the overall atmosphere.

I also like to introduce you to some different taste of my home country, so I decided to contribute an easy recipe for today’s blog. The dish is called Obazda（オバツダ）and usually eaten together with Pretzels. The meaning of the name translates into something like “mashed one” due to the procedure how it is made. There might be some things that are usually a bit difficult to get here in Japan, but Aizu has lots of great shops. The Pretzel for example can be bought at Furukawa Bakery next to the station.

Mash the Camembert with a fork and mix it with the Butter.
Cut the onion into small pieces and add it to the mix.
Season the cheese with Paprika, Salt and Pepper (mix) and spread some of the にら over everthing. Done.
The Obazda should have a brick-red color and is best with German-style Pretzels or dark bread and beer.

医療機器産業の現状

最近は雨が続き、さらに急に寒くなってきました。
季節の変わり目は体調を崩しやすいので気をつけたいところです。

先週の金曜日に会津若松のワシントンホテルで医工連携推進キックオフシンポジウムに参加してきました。
まずは、会津若松の管家市長の話の後に、「東北地域における医療関連産業の現状と取り組みについて」ということで東北経済産業局の寺家氏のプレゼンテーションがありました。
医療関連産業の特に医療機器産業についての市場動向や海外医療機器メーカーの売上状況など具体的な数字を知ることができ、現状把握ができました。
今の状況では海外医療機器メーカーが圧倒的なシェアを獲得していて、日本の医療機器メーカーは遅れを取っています。

日本の医療機器メーカーが遅れをとっている原因として、日本の医療機器市場が小さく、研究開発への投資余力が海外メーカーよりも小さいことがあると考えられます。
海外の大手医療機器メーカーは、欧米との医療機関と連携することにより新製品・新技術の開発をし、いち早く販売し市場に供給しています。
また、市場を開拓するには開発した製品を臨床試験でクリアし、安全性を保証するだけでなく、学会からの認知や新しい技術など広告するためのお金と時間をかけなければなりません。

このように医療機器産業は参入しにくい業種といえますが、地域医療産業が活性化するためにも国や県などのサポートが重要だと思います。
日本は国民皆保険が徹底しているため診療や治療の内容が保険でカバーでき、医療費はほぼコントロールされています。
そのため、医療市場の成長が公的支出の増大に繋がってしまうという要因が難しいところですが、先進医療を代表する日本のこれからに期待したいと思います。

DIE STULLE

I can’t post everything i like in japan or even all the cultural differences i recognize.
That wold be far too much for you to read.But on this post i will introduce you to something im going to miss here in the next 5 months.

There are huge differences between the german and japan eating culture e.g. the amount of meat that the germans eat. But here is something away from the german stereotypes i will focus on.

Im talking about the good old german “Stulle”.More precisely this is a term from the Berlin-area. (There are severeal names for that meal, depending on where you are geographicly in germany.)
It describes a slice of bread loaded with butter (or margarine) and slices of chesse, sausage,tomatoes or even sweets like jam, whatever you like.
Its a classical german food you can eat at every time. Historically it was a poor-peoples food (just the bread with butter) and its eaten out of the hand.
One of the first proofs of the “Stulle” was found in one of Martin Luthers Texts from 1525.
And even if the topping isnt that exotic for you, the bread is, because its the widely spread (in germany) sourdough.

This solid food is still the food that parents put in their kid’s lunchboxes for school since ages and that people in whole germany are eating quite often.

If i can find the ingredients here, you can enjoy this piece of german culture soon.

Intercultural Worplace

I have been in several companies working with different nationalities and got to know things about the complexity of human behavior.
As I am always there for only a short time during summer vacation, people like to talk to me, because they have no negative experience made yet.
Not that they had afterwards, but it’s sometimes really interesting, what people talk about others witch they are working with.

So far my experience in Germany.
I am very happy to come here to EYES, Japan.
I haven’t noticed this kind of behavior here.
Everybody is just interested in the meaning of the team, and is helping each other.
Even if there is a problem, they don’t try to pull someone on his side against somebody else.
There are a lot different cultures and nationalitys in this company. And everybody is accepting the others personality.
Not even with camouflage trousers or a mowhawk haircut I could never sense things like “what the hell is he thinking/doing?”
There are many things I learned in the last two weeks and I am sure to learn even more positive behavior in the rest of my internship time.

Thank you for taking good care of me and my comrades.

Getting new impressions for work from EYES, Japan

I’m German and new to ‘EYES, Japan’.
I recently successfully passed my studies of Medical Informatics and Biomedical Engineering in Germany.
I like Software Engineering and Medical Imaging so I hope that I can help the company with these skills.
Here I want to learn more about these topics, because some people are more advanced to visualize medical data than I am.

For example I want to learn how to handle the VTK Framework for visualizing medical data like DICOM (format for storing e.g. CT pictures) and the ITK Framework for analysing such data.

I hope it will be a great time here.
