Akabeko A papier-mache model of a legendary red ox that turned into stone and waited upon Buddha. Akabeko have been made in Aizu in Fukushima Prefecture in Japan for about 400 years, it is believed. They are painted a vivid and lustrous red, which is thought to ward off evil and pestilence. For this reason they have for long been popular as both a children's toy and lucky charm.
